2007 FOOTBALL POLLS

Class 5A

9-5A –  Allen is in.  Allen (5-0) looks to continue its perfect season against Lake Highlands (2-3) and a possible district championship clincher with Plano East waiting in week 10.  Richardson (0-5) is the only team eliminated from contention.  Plano (4-1) can clinch with a victory over Plano East (3-2) or in week 10 against Richardson.  Wylie (3-2) holds down the third spot and has the all-important head-to-head tie-breaker against Plano East coming off their 39-36 win last week, but needs one more win against Plano West (2-3) or Lake Highlands.  Plano West faces tough odds and could get in but faces the test at Wylie and against Berkner (1-4).

10-5A –  South Garland is in.  The Colonels (5-0) will clinch the district championship with wins over Garland (2-3) and Lakeview Centennial (3-2).  Sachse and North Garland, both 0-5 are out.  Naaman Forest (4-1) needs a win in one of its final two games against Rockwall (3-2) or Rowlett (3-2) to clinch.  Centennial plays at Rowlett in a possible elimination game this week before closing with South Garland.  Rockwall hosts Naaman Forest before traveling to winless Sachse.  Garland is on life support, but has a pulse needing wins against undefeated South Garland and winless North Garland and help.

11-5A – Dallas Carter and Dallas Skyline are in.  Carter (3-0) and Skyline (3-0) meet for the district title this Friday.  Sunset (0-3) is alive but winless on the season, leaving three teams fighting for the remaining two playoffs spots.  Molina, White and Adams are all (1-2).  White faces Adams and Molina in its final two games and is in with a win in either game. Adams closes the season against undefeated Skyline so it makes the W.T. White game imperative.  Molina could be in the drivers seat for the final playoff spot with a victory over winless Sunset this week.

12-5A –  Longview and Mesquite are 3-0 and in.  They meet this week in Longview for the district championship.  Tyler Lee (2-1) could clinch with a win over John Tyler (0-3) this Friday or at Mesquite in week 10.  Mesquite Horn (1-2) looks to be a lock for the final playoff spot needing a win over North Mesquite (0-3) or Longview in the final two weeks.  John Tyler and North Mesquite are winless but alive, but a win by Horn eliminates both teams and ends the suspense.

13-5A – Temple (5-0) is in command of the district race and has clinched a playoff berth. A&M Consolidated (3-1) is second, and needs a split of their final two games in get in. Bryan and Killeen Ellison are tied for the third, but the Vikings own the tiebreaker due to a win over the Eagles. Harker Heights and Shoemaker are one game back, and need help to reach the postseason. Should they both make the playoffs, Bryan and A&M Consolidated would go the Division I route, with Temple and Ellison to Division II.

14-5A – This district remains wide open. Stony Point leads the way at 4-1, with Pflugerville, Round Rock, Georgetown, and Leander tied at 3-2. Some key games in untangling the logjam include a showdown this week between Georgetown and Stony Point, as well Round Rock hosting Cedar Park (2-3 in district). The key game in Week 10 will be Round Rock at Pflugerville. Also, Leander faces cross-town rival Cedar Park.

15-5A – Lufkin leads with a 3-0 district lead. Conroe and College Park are in good position at 2-1, with The Woodlands and Magnolia both at 1-2. Lufkin closes with Magnolia and Conroe as the Panthers attempt to wrap up the title. College Park faces their cross-town rival The Woodlands this week before finishing with Oak Ridge. The battle for the final playoff spot should come down to the final week clash between The Woodlands and Magnolia. That winner would join Conroe in the Division I bracket while Lufkin and College Park would compete in Division II.

16-5A – Westfield and Klein Oak are the co-leaders at 4-0 and have clinched playoff berths. This week’s Mustang-Panther matchup will determine the district champion, with Westfield headed to Division I and Klein Oak to Division II. Klein Forest and Spring are tied at 2-2 and will play each other this week. The winner will join Klein at 3-2, and if Klein Forest beats Spring, that would sew up the final two spots for the Golden Eagles and Bearkats. Klein would be a Division I team if they get in, otherwise Klein Forest or Spring gets that spot.

17-5A – Cy-Ridge (5-0), Cy-Falls (4-1), and Strake Jesuit (4-1) have locked up playoff positions. Cy-Fair (3-2) is the favorite for the final berth. Cy-Ridge can clinch the championship with a win at Strake Jesuit this week. Cy-Falls plays Jersey Village this week, and can secure second place with a win. Jersey Village (2-3) still has an outside shot, but the Falcons must win their final two games over Cy-Falls and Jesuit, and get help. Cy-Ridge and Cy-Fair advance as Division I entrants, while Strake Jesuit and Cy-Falls would move on the Division II teams.

18-5A – As usual, Katy (5-0) has dominated the district as the Tigers own a two-game lead on the pack and can lock up another district title with a win this week over Elsik. The Rams (3-2) are a part of a four-way tie for second with Hastings, Cinco Ranch, and Mayde Creek. Elsik closes with Katy and Katy Taylor, while Hastings has Morton Ranch and a key game in week 10 against Cinco Ranch. The Cougars get Katy Taylor this week in preparation for the Hastings game. Mayde Creek faces Alief Taylor before facing Katy next week. Katy Taylor (2-3) still has a shot to get into the postseason, but must win their final two games against Cinco Ranch and Elsik.

19-5A – Eisenhower (5-0) is in control of the race, and needs a split of their last two games to take the district crown. Preseason favorite Stratford (4-1) is in good shape as well, needing one win to wrap up a playoff berth. There is a three-way tie between Aldine, MacArthur, and Nimitz for third at 3-2. MacArthur has the edge with head-to-head wins over both teams, and the Generals can clinch a spot by winning their last two games over Northbrook and Eisenhower. Nimitz has the toughest closing schedule with Stratford and Aldine, and that match-up with the Mustangs will likely determine the final berth. Eisenhower will be a Division I team, joined by either Nimitz or Aldine depending on the final standings. Stratford will be one of the Division II representatives.

20-5A – Lamar (5-0) needs one win to take the district championship and they have already sewn up a Division I spot. Chavez (4-1) has clinched a Division II spot, but most close against contenders Westside and Madison. Westside and Madison are tied for third at 3-2, and the Marlins have the tiebreaker by beating the Wolves earlier in district play. Westside can clinch a Division I berth by beating Sam Houston. Madison needs a win over Chavez and a Westbury loss to Milby in order to clinch. Westbury (2-3) beat Madison head-to-head, so the Rebels need two wins and a Madison loss to reach the playoffs.

21-5A – Humble (5-0) and West Brook (5-0) have clinched playoff spots, and will play on Friday in Beaumont for the district title. Baytown Lee (3-2) needs a win over Channelview (2-3) to lock up a berth. Channelview is tied with Kingwood and Port Arthur Memorial for fourth, but the Mustangs have the advantage with head-to-head wins over both of their competitors. Kingwood can advance to the Division I playoffs alongside Humble with wins over Atascocita and Baytown Sterling. Memorial needs two wins and a Kingwood loss to advance, while Channelview must win twice and have both Kingwood and Memorial lose once to move on. West Brook will be joined in the Division II bracket by Baytown Lee unless Memorial or Channelview advance, which would move the Ganders to the Division I bracket.

22-5A – North Shore (5-0), Pasadena Memorial (5-0) and Deer Park (4-1) have won playoffs berths, with North Shore and Deer Park in Division I, and Memorial as the top seed in Division II. The Mustangs and Mavericks clash Thursday for the district title, and Memorial will face Deer Park on the road next week. South Houston (3-2) can lock up the final Division II berth by beating Dobie on Saturday. However, a Longhorn win puts Dobie and La Porte into the picture and sets up a possible three-way tie with the Longhorns and Bulldogs playing each other next Friday.

23-5A – Clements (7-0) has locked up the top Division II seed, and can complete a perfect regular season with a win over FB Austin next week. Hightower (5-1) clinched a Division I berth with last week’s win over Marshall (4-2). The Buffaloes are tied with Kempner for third place, and both teams can clinch postseason bids with wins this week. Kempner will play Marshall in the regular season finale next week.

24-5A – Pearland (4-0) is in the driver’s seat for the district championship and the Oilers have sewn up a Division I playoff berth. Brazoswood (3-1) is in second, and the Buccaneers can clinch a Division II spot with wins over either Clear Brook or Clear Lake. Ball High, Clear Creek, and Clear Brook are tied at 2-2, with Clear Lake at 2-3. Key games this week are Brazoswood at Clear Brook and Pearland at Ball. Ball travels to Clear Creek next week. Creek has the tiebreaker on both Lake and Brook, and can advance to the playoffs by beating Ball High. Brook can get in with two wins, but must play both Brazoswood and Pearland. Ball High can advance with two wins, or a win over Clear Creek and Clear Lake loss to Brazoswood in their finale. Lake needs a win over Brazoswood., and a Ball High loss since the Falcons have the tiebreaker over the Tors.

Class 4A

17-4A – Manor (6-0) is district champion and Division II #1 seed.  Week 9 will make things a lot clearer. Travis (5-1) and Johnson (5-1) control their own fate and are in with wins this weekend.  Travis host McCallum (4-2) Friday and Johnson hosts Elgin (4-2) Saturday.  McCallum closes with Crockett (1-5), while Elgin has the task of hosting district champion Manor in week 10.  Johnson with a win would be the Division I representative.

18-4A – Brenham (4-0) and Waller (4-1) have clinched playoff births.  Brenham can clinch district championship with win versus Willis Friday.  Livingston (3-1) can clinch third playoff ticket with win at Montgomery.  Montgomery (1-3) remains alive but must beat Livingston and Willis and have Livingston lose in week 10 versus Waller.  Caney Creek (2-2) must win at Huntsville and versus Brenham to hope for three-way tie with Montgomery and Livingston.  If Livingston wins Friday, the Waller and Livingston game in week 10 is for Division II seeding and Brenham would be in Division I.

19-4A –  Scarborough (0-4) is the only team eliminated from playoff contention.  Jones (3-1) plays Sterling (2-2) while Furr (3-1) plays Kashmere (2-3) looking to clinch playoff births.  Wheatley (3-2) controls its own destiny and can clinch with a win at Jones in week 10 after going out of district in a showdown game versus Yates in week 9. Worthing (2-2) plays Scarborough before a week 10 match-up with Furr with a possible playoff berth on the line.  Furr would be the Division I representative.

20-4A –  Yates (5-0), Sharpstown (4-0) and Washington (3-1) are in. Yates and Sharpstown meet for the district championship in a week 10 clash.  Sharpstown will be in Division I,  while Yates will be the Division II #1 seed.

21-4A –  Crosby (4-1) is in.  Galena Park (5-0) hosts Smiley (4-1) this week with the winner clinching a playoff spot.  Barbers Hill (3-2) remains alive but must win at CE King and have Smiley beat Galena Park to set up a week 10 playoff showdown in Mont Belvieu when the Eagles host the Yellowjackets.

22-4A –  PN-G (5-0) is in with a win that would eliminate Central (2-3).  Nederland (4-1) hosts Dayton (4-1) Friday with the loser in a precarious position heading into week 10.  Lumberton (4-1) travels to LC-M (0-5) before a week 10 game versus Nederland with Lumberton holding the all-important tie-breaker over Dayton after a district opening 8-7 thriller.  Dayton hosts PN-G in a week 10 finale.

23-4A –  Texas City, La Marque and Dickinson control their own fate.  Texas City (4-0) visits Angleton, then hosts Friendswood (3-2), the only team with an outside shot to make the playoffs.  La Marque (4-1) hosts Dickinson (4-1) with the winner set to be the #1 Division II seed.  Dickinson then travels to Brazosport (0-4) to close out week 10, a tough opponent despite the Exporters record, losing all their district games by a combined 14 points and the last two, one point heart-breakers to Friendswood (21-20) and Texas City (22-21).  La Marque and Dickinson both hold tie-breaking wins over Friendswood earlier in the district campaign.

24-4A –  Lamar Consolidated and El Campo both control their own destiny.  Lamar Consolidated (3-0) takes on surprising Foster (1-2) after the Falcons upset win over previously unbeaten El Campo (14-7).  The Rice Birds (2-1) host Seven Lakes (1-2) before what could be a district championship showdown in week 10 at Traylor Stadium.  Terry (1-2) along with Bay City (1-2) remain in the mix, but a week 9 match-up eliminates the loser from playoff contention and puts the winner on the inside track to a playoff berth.  Terry closes at Katy against Seven Lakes while Bay City returns home to host Foster in week 10 finales.

Class 3A

17-3A –  Waco La Vega (3-0) is in.  The Pirates can wrap-up the district championship by winning its final two games, against winless Lorena (0-3) and at rival Waco Connally (2-1).  Connally can set up a district championship showdown in week 10 if they defeat China Spring (2-1) in a battle of second place teams this Friday.  China Spring can lock up its playoff berth by defeating the Cadets this week or at Gatesville (1-2) to close the season.  Gatesville and Robinson (1-2) are both alive, but one team will be eliminated altogether as the two teams meet this weekend at Rockets Stadium.

18-3A –  Liberty Hill and Cameron Yoe are undefeated and should square off in a week 10 district championship clash.  Rockdale (2-1) has the inside track on the final playoff spot, but could be in championship contention if they beat Yoe this Friday and the Panthers stumble the final two weeks against Taylor (1-2) and the Yoemen.  Taylor remains alive, but the Ducks must win at Liberty Hill, take care of winless Hutto (0-3) and become huge Yoe fans.

19-3A –  Madisonville is undefeated and has the inside track at the district championship.  The Mustangs hold the tie-breaker over Palestine (66-31) and finish at winless Groesbeck (0-3) and host Mexia.  Palestine and Mexia,  both 2-1, are tied for second place.  Mexia could set up a district championship showdown when they host Palestine this Friday.  Palestine Westwood and Fairfield are still alive but must have the Mexia/Palestine loser drop its final two games.  Fairfield closes with Mexia , while Westwood has the more daunting task of knocking off rival Palestine and Madisonville.

20-3A –  Diboll and Carthage are both 3-0.  They meet in a week 10 championship finale at Diboll.  Crockett (2-1) has the inside track at the final berth and looks for a split in its final two games with Diboll and at winless Rusk to clinch.  Huntington is alive at 1-2, but faces a tough road test at Carthage before closing with Center (0-3).

21-3A –   West Orange-Stark is in. The 5-0 Mustangs can clinch the district championship with a week 9 win against Orangefield (2-3).  Kirbyville (4-1) is in with a win at Silsbee or in the closer against Hamshire-Fannett (2-3). Jasper and Silsbee, both 3-2, meet in what should be an elimination finale at Bulldog stadium in week 10.

22-3A –   Coldspring and Splendora have clinched.  Both teams are 3-0 in district play and will meet in Splendora for a week 10 district championship showdown.  Cleveland (2-1), winless in its first 6 games, proved its not how many, but when you win in this six team district as they have the inside track on the third playoff berth.  The Indians clinch the final playoff spot with one more win, this week at Coldspring or at home in a week 10 finale versus rival Tarkington.  Shepherd and Liberty, both 0-2, must have Cleveland lose both games to set up a winner-take-all week 10 match-up at Liberty. Shepherd must win at Splendora and Liberty versus Tarkington to stay alive. Cleveland owns the head-to-head tie breaker over both teams in the third place battle.

23-3A –  Giddings (3-0) is in.  The Buffaloes can clinch the district title with one win in its final two games at Bellville    (1-2) or Smithville (0-3), who is out of playoff contention.  Caldwell and Navasota are 2-1 and control their own destiny.  Caldwell is at Navasota for a week 9 second place clincher, then closes at home against Bellville.  The Rattlers  follow the Hornet match-up with a road trip to La Grange (1-2) for what could turn into a elimination finale in week 10.  The Leopards have to win at Smithville to keep its hopes alive.

24-3A –  Columbus and Sealy both 4-1 need one win to get in.  Columbus holds the tie-breaker for the district title with an earlier 20-17 home win.  The Cardinals close with Wharton (2-3) and at Sweeny (2-3).  Sealy hosts Columbia (3-2) then hits the road with a week 10 finale at winless Stafford.  Columbia and Needville (3-2) are tied for third with the Blue Jays holding the 42-17 tie-breaker from week 8.  Needville's path may be easier with games against winless Stafford and Wharton, who looks to be on the outside of the playoff chase.  Columbia comes off the road trip to Sealy to host Brookshire-Royal (2-3) in week 10.
